VBR encoding provides the best utilization of the MPEG-2 bitstream by analyzing the motion of the video being encoded and varying the bitrate accordingly; More action, more bitrate, less action, less bitrate. This generally leads to higher quality video and smaller file sizes which is always good.

Multi-pass VBR takes this one step farther by making multiple passes through the video, each time revising the bitrate structure generated from the previous pass. This used to be the realm of high-end hardware encoders, but now it's available right on your desktop.

The main windows of the program have modern look:

• Headers and free space in windows have nice gradient background;
• Buttons in the header filed also look much nicer because they also support gradients;
• Removed unnecessary borders around graphic components, that helps to avoids visual clutter;
• The account section of the status bar has it's own customizable popup menu. The status bar has also an option to show the account log or have it hidden.

URL Manager for Retrieval of HTML Images in The Background
The Bat! now shows images in HTML messages referenced by http protocol. Noting the fact that this opportunity has been abused by data “phishers”, The Bat! Introduces sophisticated URL Manager to control the retrieval of messages not by folder or addressee, but by particular hosts or URLs.

Upgraded Text Editor
The MicroEd text editor is improved. Now it supports Unicode and all the available system fonts. You have the possibility to use different fonts for different elements of the message and benefit of the system-wide drag-and-drop option. We also added the Redo function and spell checking for multiple languages at once. Text search is equipped with new options. Message signature is highlighted.

Easier Support and Maintenance
The Bat! now sets %EMAIL% environment variable to its mail directory (where mail accounts and address books are kept on disk). You can now type %EMAIL% in the address location of Windows Explorer to quickly to The Bat! mail directory. This significantly simplifies technical support: the user is easily able to locate the mail directory right from Windows Explorer, regardless whether this directory in “Program Files” or “User’s data” folder, even if the user doesn’t exactly know where the mail directory actually is.

Capitalization of the Addressees’ Name
The first character is of the addressee’s name is automatically capitalized if the recipient is specified by e-mail only. For example, if you specify only "stefan@ritlabs.com" in the "To:" line of a new message, it will now put "Hello Stefan," in the message text, and not "Hello stefan," as before. This is because of the new algorithm of %TOFName and related macros.

Advanced Image Viewer
The internal image viewer allows viewing all attached images in selected messages, navigating between images. It supports rotate, advanced resize and zoom algorithms and full screen mode. It now also supports JPEG images with 4-component color schemes (CMYK and YCCK). Such JPEG files can also displayed as embedded images of HTML messages.

Improved Speed
Message list sorting by "From", "To" or "Subject" column is now five times faster. The Bat! should also consume less memory because of fixed memory leaks.

Support of TNEF Format
Some attachments in a message forwarded from Outlook were neither visible nor accessible from The Bat!, because Outlook uses its own (TNEF) format for encapsulating attachments. These messages did contain winmail.dat or message.att file rather than the actually attached files.
The Bat! currently support extraction of regular files. TNEF can also include nested binary (Outlook IMessage) messages, Outlook meeting requests, Outlook delivery reports, and so on. Such binary Outlook objects are not yet extracted.

Smart Security Buttons
The buttons that appear in the header panel when you see a PGP or S/MIME message now display multiple properties of a message. For example, when a message is signed and encrypted, you will see a single button that combine both “signature” and “encryption” images.
The menu of this button works smarter: it shows the whole list of security actions available on this message (e.g. decrypt, show signature details, import certificate, etc). The most important action is marked by the bold font style. If you click the left mouse key on this security button, this important action is executed. If the message has more than one important action, the left mouse key then invokes the pop-up menu to give the user choice: which of the important actions to perform.

The book is aimed at those who have used Web layout applications like GoLive, Dreamweaver, or FrontPage, but now wish to know more about the underlying code; s well as those who may already know HTML but would like to learn proper XHTML, especially as a step toward learning XML. The author served on the W3C HTML Working Group as an invited expert, and her confident knowledge in this area is evident in her writing.

- A BSOD could occur when a USB device was removed without using the hardware removal tool of Windows. This was a problem in the SGE filter driver and is fixed now.
- The New Hardware found - Wizard now also does no longer start after the mirgration of SGE from an earlier version.
- An error in the display of the correct encryption state in SGESTATE was fixed.
- It could happen that the WksCfgSrv crashed after the logon of a user to Windows. This is fixed now.
- The task bar now shows when an open SGE application is on the desktop.
- The icon for the FIPS monitor was not restored after an explorer restart.

This is one of the most sought after books on watercolor portraiture. Reid suggests the face and still gets a likeness. He leaves something for the viewer to fill in and be a part of the painting. It takes practice and intuition to bring out the aritists innate intuitive abilities expressed on paper. Reid shows step by step how he approaches his subject. He focuses on contrast and value and immediacy to give the painting life and spontaniety. A valued book to read over and over.

Review:
Not Charles' best book -- but quite good none the less
...The book is brown, in colour and concept. Charles' book on Natural Painting is much more appealing. However this book is well written and illustrated although not colorfully. There is some interesting insight into portrait technique -- but realistically, I doubt if Charles learned to paint this way himself ... his talent is inborn and self-taught. His portraits are startling and unique in their ability to capture likenesses from a swirling mass of tone and/or color sometimes using only subtlist details of shade and highlight. The facial details that we plebians see (2 eyes, nose, mouth, chin, hair) have little to do with Charles' images -- sometimes many key features are ill defined or undefined ... however he always manages to capture the likeness. He sees in a different way -- I think he sees primarily tones (shades of gray) more than anything -- color seems to be secondary to him (this is apparent in his Natural Painting book too) -- yet he also has a unique and insightful perspective on colors, especially skin tones. A good book.

EmEditor is now able to open even larger than 248 GB by opening a portion of the file with the new custom bar - Large File Controller. The Large File Controller allows you to specify the beginning point, end point, and range of the file to be opened. It also allows you to stop the opening of the file and monitor the real size of the file and the size of the temporary disk available.

You can write a macro to do almost whatever you want within EmEditor! Not only can you define a macro which records keystrokes that you use and reference repeatedly, but you can also write your own macros that can manipulate other applications, Windows-based files, or network functionalities. The macros are based on the Windows Scripting Host (WSH) engine, so you can use all of the powerful, robust objects available under the Windows Scripting Host. You can program macros with popular script languages including javascript and VBScript. You can even program with PerlScript, Python, PHPScript, Ruby, and other ActiveScript languages as long as the script engines you want to use are installed on your system. Nevertheless, EmEditor barely forefeits its light-weightedness when using macros. EmEditor macros are modules designed independently of EmEditor executable and are implemented as a Dynamic Link Library (DLL) file. To conserve system resources, the DLL is only loaded during the macro execution.

The Unicode support is a must for anyone who uses international languages. Many text editors claim they support Unicode (UTF-7, UTF-8 and UTF-16), however, they only convert Unicode to the system encoding (or ANSI) internally when they open files, so they cannot actually edit characters that are not supported by the system encoding. For instance, many text editors cannot actually edit Shift-JIS (Japanese) encoding on English Windows. Most text editors cannot even open Unicode file names. EmEditor supports Unicode natively, and in fact, the whole program is built as a Unicode application. EmEditor allows you to open a file with any encoding supported in the Windows system, and you can easily convert from one encoding to another within EmEditor. EmEditor allows you to open Unicode file names, and allows you to search for Unicode characters. Since EmEditor supports Unicode characters even outside of the Basic Multilingual Plane (BMP), it can display the CJK Extension B characters as long as a supporting font is available on the system. With EmEditor plug-ins, EmEditor allows you to convert a selected text to HTML/XML Character Reference or Universal Character Names, and vice versa.

- The Copy command now copies the entire current line when no text is selected. The old behavior can be also selected by using the Copy Selection command
- The Cut command now cuts the entire current line when no text is selected. The old behavior can be also selected by using the Cut Selection command
- A new dialog appears when invalid characters are contained in the opening file
- A new dialog appears when the document contains characters which will be lost if saved as selected encoding for saving
- Find in Files results can be redirected in the Output Bar (Find in Files > Use Output Bar)
- The new Jump Next and Jump Previous commands can be used to jump between results in the Output bar
- Mouse wheel with CTRL increases or decreases the font size
- Mouse wheel with Right-click moves to next or previous document
